China, Al Gore, analysts? Almost all of the recent rumors–and there have been plenty–can be traced back to one of eight types of sources.

It seems like theres been a new iPhone rumor–if not two–every day for months now. But where do all theiPhone 5 rumorscome from? Some say it will be released in June…or August…or October and it will have a tear-drop shape, or a Transylvanian bevel, or come equipped with its own cloaking device. Ok, some of those may have been the product of too much Mountain Dew and SyFy before bed, but the iPhone rumor mill is nearly as wacky.

Part of the reason is that Apple is so tight-lipped about everything, it leaves the rest of the world grasping at straws to guess what the company has in store. And sometimes it seems like those straws are laced with hallucinogens that get passed up the tech gossip food chain, translated, re-translated, and then synthesized by the likes of us here at CNET to see how it fits into the big picture of what we might already know about the new iPhone. Unfortunately, much of that knowledge probably also came from similar straws.

With each new rumor we always try to convey a sense of where the information is coming from and how trustworthy the source seems to be. Theres actually manymoreiPhone rumors out there that never see the light of day because we and other media outlets deem the sources to be too unreliable.

I took a look back at the rumors that seemed worth reporting between June and now and was able to trace almost all of them–and there were plenty–back to one of eight types of sources.

1.China and other spots along the Apple supply chain: Perhaps the biggest source of rumors this iPhone cycle has been Asia, whether its product leaks from the massiveFoxconn factoriesthat manufacture and assemble the bulk of Apple products, or from the many component makers spread across the region, or even the smallest after-marketaccessory makerchurning out cheap off-brand iPhone cases. For the past year its been a steady stream of clues coming from these sources based on design drawings, covert photos of components, orinventory labels,美容 or some other tiny tidbit. Of course, the supply chain does also reach all the way to these United States, where CNET reported on duelingBest Buy leaksearlier this year.

2.Sketchy translations of Japanese and Chinese blogs: These days, Google Translate may be one of the biggest enablers of the iPhone rumor mill. Each country has its own tech gossip infrastructure, and because Asian countries wake up before us each day and are physically closer to those device-manufacturing facilities, their blogs often getearly scoops. For whatever reason, though, most of them are uneven in their reliability at best.

3.A combination of bad Asian news translations and implications read into minute details of a slideshow presentation:Sometimes the rumor mongers really go the long way to make a connection, likethis exampleinvolving thepossibility of HSPA connectivitycoming to theiPhone 5. Remember, this is one that we deemed worth writing about, so you can imagine the crazy suppositions that dont make it through, like the one about the iPhone 5 discovered in the belly of a fish caught off the coast of Mexico. That one turned out to be a joke poking fun at the silliness of all the iPhone rumors–oh sweet irony.

4.Anonymous sources: So manyanonymous sourcestalking to so many blogs and news outlets. But who are they, and can they be trusted? In my experience–reporting on all sorts of things, not just iPhones–Ive been approached by all different sorts of folks wanting to talk on condition of anonymity. This includes, but is not limited to, analysts, PR people, other bloggers and journalists, 外汇 former employees who think they know something, former employees who actually know something, former employees with a clear axe to grind, delivery people who may have seen something they shouldnt have, friends of the delivery guy, and even occasionally, current employees who actually know what theyre talking about. Well soon find out who has the best sources for iPhone 5 information, but so far The Wall Street Journal and our friends at All Things Digital have the best batting average. Their sourcesproved correctabout the only thing we now know for sure–that the iPhone will be unveiled this week.

5.Random guesses based on the schedules of other companies: A popular source of rumors this go-round has been the carriers and other companies with relationships with Apple.AT&Tand other companies warned their employees to expect a busy October, and word even leaked out of Apple retail stores that vacation days were a no-no in October. Even the scheduled dates forTwitter developer eventshave fueled iPhone release speculation.

6.Al Gore: It only makes sense that the man who invented the Internet and/or climate change–depending on who you ask–would have theinside scoop on the next iPhone(s).

7.Analysts:Perhaps the most reliable group on this list, analysts are often briefed on many tech companies plans, and lots of other companies pay big bucks for their holisticknowledgeof an industry. In other words, they have actual inside information and stand to lose the most if they get it wrong.

8.Detective developers:By far my favorite group on this list (sorry, Mr. Vice President) are the clever developers who encounter iPhone clues from time to time from pieces of data that would be completely esoteric or indecipherable to mere mortals. Seems like theres a big business opportunity for at least one group that we didnt see any rumors from this year–anyone know a goodiPadpsychic?

Analysts have expressed their doubts over claims from a J.P. Morgan report that Apple cut its iPad orders from certain suppliers by 25 percent over the fourth quarter.

The iPad&39s supply chain is fine, say analysts.

Following claims from a J.P. Morgan analyst that Apple cut the number of iPads it plans to order from suppliers, other analysts have chimed in to disagree.

J.P. Morgan analyst Gokul Hariharan yesterday issued an investor note saying Apple wouldslash its iPad orders by 25 percent for the fourth quarter, a move that would affect such suppliers as Hon Hai Precision. The report triggered aBloomberg reportand prompted speculation that Apple may be seeing weaker demand for thetabletin Europe or just trying to work with less inventory.

The analysts claims also took a bite out of Apples stock in early trading yesterday.

But Hariharan isnt finding much consensus among other analysts.

Piper Jaffrays Apple analyst, Gene Munster, disputed the chatter of supply chain order reductions, saying that following a trip to Asia,外汇 hes sticking with his estimate ofiPadshipments for the third and fourth quarters of 10 million and 12 million, respectively.

We also note that previous calls based on sell-in or supply chain data have, for the most part, proven to have very little correlation with Apples results vs. consensus dating back to earlyiPodshipments, Munster added in a note released yesterday. We believe Apple purposely maintains enough suppliers and manufacturing partners to make any one supply-side data point inconclusive. For example, Apple is currently transitioning to Brazilian iPad manufacturing, which may be impacting Asian manufacturing numbers.

Susquehanna analyst Chris Caso also took issue with claims of supply chain problems, according to anAll Things Digital report, calling the matter a change in the production schedule of the iPad rather than any type of cut.

Finally, J.P. Morgans Mark Moskowitz weighed in on the alert issued by his fellow analyst, 美容 saying Hariharans report is not the view of the U.S. IT hardware team. Instead, the team sees build plans and shipment levels for both the iPad and iPhone continuing to rise. Hearing a lot of supply chain noise over Apple products during the past several months, Moskowitz noted that Apples operating results and shipments are still managing to surpass expectations.

Various adjustments to the supply chain do occur often, acknowledged Moskowitz, but any issues would impact the suppliers more so than Apple.

Whats happening? Im Brian Tong here and welcome to the Apple Byte for all the good and bad inside the world of Apple. Now, the anticipation and the hype is at an all time high and were giving you the last few Apple Bytes of info before the big As announcement. Now, the Cupertino kids announced the official invitation on the event. It will be held at the company headquarters on October 4th. Thats Tuesday at 10 a.m. and its a perfect timing since thats right after my Bikram Yoga class. Thats right. Im flexible. And, the special event is titled Lets Talk iPhone. Now everyone has been waiting because theres still lot of mysteries surrounding what Apple would actually release at this event. According to 9to5Mac, new part numbers for a new iPhone updated iPhone 4S and iPod Touches have already appeared in Apples inventory system. The next-gen iPhone known as N94 and Apples iOS SDK Kit has appeared in Apples inventory system and according to them it pack some A5 dual-core processor, a Qualcomm Gobi Baseband chips for GSM and CDMA compatibility with an 8-megapixel camera and 1 gig of RAM. Now, they also report two products with the N90A part number that have appeared and are believed to be black and white models for a modified 8 gig iPhone 4 that might put the new low-end budget iPhone. The current iPhone 4s part number is known as N90. Now, three iPod Touch models with part numbers N81A have appeared and theyre believed to be the rumored white iPod Touches since N81 represents the current black iPod Touch and at that point to just a cosmetic change with the same at 32 and 64 gig options alongside the current black ones. So, when can we expect the official launch so we can gather our lounge chairs and blankies and wait in long lines for over ten hours without a bathroom break? Well, according to Boy Genius report, AT&T employees have been blocked from taking any vacations during the first two weeks of October. Earlier this month, it was reported that Sprint was doing the same. At the time of the show, the launch date is still up in the air and none of my retail contacts have been notified of any official blackout period. Now, as we get closer of what other features might we expect to the next iPhone. According to Macotakara, a China Unicom rep told onlookers during a Keynote and Macworld Asia 2011 that the iPhone 5 will have HSPA+ capabilities for faster high speed data. Now, we also included this slide just to make sure people are paying attention. China Unicom was the first carrier to have the iPhone 4. So, if you got to be wondering what that guy was smoking to publicly announce that. Probably the same thing that AT&T in the U.S. has been smoking has since theyve been marketing the HSPA+ as 4G all this time. Now, other revelations from 9to5mac point the biggest new feature in the next-gen iPhone called Assistant. Its the next evolution of voice control and based on their acquisition of the Siri Assistant. Now, thats all voice-controlled and it will allow you to make appointments that are instantly added to your counter, composed voice to text messages, and creating reminders for buying that rash ointment you forgot about. Its still itchy. Now, the Assistant will also be able to ask you questions for more details just like a conversation and if this is true, I wont need friends anymore. Now,美容 well find out about the real facts on October 4th. But, lets just tease you a little bit with what it might look like. The team at Benm.at decided to do what no one else would and build a prototype iPhone 5 based on the CAD designs, case leaks, and mockups of the rumor and let me remind you non-existent iPhone 5. Now, look at how dramatically he reveals it. Dude, stop starring at me like that and Im still impressed but awkwardly blown away by watching an Asian guy really fluent in German. -[unk]. -Now, the prototype was a machine from a solid block of aluminum and treated with glass pearls. It even features the teardrop design and honestly, that looks really nice but I might as well have made and unlock this monster out of a sandwich. And, if youre wondering, do people really care about this phone? All this time, are people really going to make the switch? Well, 41 percent of mobile consumers planned to purchase the iPhone 5 and thats according to a study by InMobi that covered users in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. In addition to that, 52 percent of BlackBerry users planned to switch to iPhone. 51 percent of current iPhone users planned to upgrade to the 5 for their purchase. And, 27 percent of android users would join the side of the computer [unk] company. Now also, 50 percent of all those people surveyed are planning to upgrade within the next six months and those numbers are scary. But, its Apple that might be a little scared after Amazon rock the tech world with their Kindle Fire announcement that is sure to change the tablet game. The Kindle Fire is a 7-inch LCD screen tablet thats based on the RIM PlayBook design. It will run Amazons own custom UI on top of android. Theres no web camera, microphone, or 3G. But, you know what. It doesnt matter because its $199. Amazon is one of the few companies that has the content library with movies, music books, and magazine to support a content consumption device like a tablet and although its not directly competing with the iPad, it instantly elevated itself to the best android tablet. And, whats the general consumer going to do this holiday season when they look at an iPad for $499 or a Kindle Fire for $199? It will be a very interesting holiday to see how it plays out but kudos to Kindle. It can only get more interesting when they release future hardware and a larger tablet.
