(CNN)– The debate over whether the hand-to-hand-combat excesses of Black Friday represent a grotesque over-commercialization of the holiday season has lost its meaning.

The point is no longer whether or not Black Friday tarnishes the holidays.

The point is that Black Friday has become a holiday of its own.

It will arrive again this week, even as Americans are still sitting at their Thanksgiving dinner tables. Black Friday — with its door-buster sales, hordes of frenzied shoppers shoving for position, employees nervously waiting for the onslaught — has shrugged off the confines of its name and has now established squatters rights on Thursday.

Bob GreeneTarget stores will open at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving night, three hours earlier than the stores midnight opening in 2011. Wal-Mart will begin its Black Friday sales at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Toys R Us will match that 8 p.m. opening, as will Sears. Best Buy, which will wait until midnight to open its doors, seems almost like a dowdy throwback.

The store employees around the country who are upset that the schedules will deprive them of a big part of their holiday Thursday (many of them will have to arrive hours before the customers) and the citizens who fret that the lure of the deeply discounted sales will empty out their home-for-the-holidays family gatherings are probably fighting a losing battle. Black Friday appears to be triumphant, and it has taken on the characteristics of the holidays it mimics.

Like real holidays, it occurs on a predesignated day each year. People anticipate it and mark the date. Across the breadth of the nation they are absent from work to observe it. And when the day arrives, they congregate like. . .well, like congregations.

Black Friday does away with the middleman — in the universe of holidays, it is the only one that exists solely to sell merchandise. It celebrates nothing it commemorates only itself. It is an annual festival of the cash register.

The derivation of the term Black Friday is open to dispute, but it has come to refer to the theory that merchants go into the black — into the profit side of the ledger — during the holiday shopping season, which traditionally commences the day after Thanksgiving.

Certainly, and especially in this economy, anything that brings people into the stores is welcome. Brick-and-mortar stores can use the foot traffic as shopping goes increasingly online. And digital doors are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

But there is something about Black Friday — in the pandemonium of its execution — that is unsettling and cynical. The Wal-Mart employee who was trampled to death on Long Island in 2008 as shoppers knocked the doors from their hinges and stepped on him in their rush to the stacks of sales items, the woman in California last year who unleashed pepper spray on fellow shoppers vying for Xbox video game consoles. . .those kinds of scenes are becoming the iconic images of the long night.

Of course, the new holiday would not have taken hold if people werent embracing it.

But you have to ask yourself: When people, as they grow older, remember the best holidays of their lives, is it some discounted gift that they recall with warmth and fondness? Some deal that they found? Or is it the family members and loved ones with whom they spent the holiday time?

Breaking up the flow of a real holiday so you can make it on time to the beginning of the Black Friday holiday seems a little misguided. It is one thing during the holiday season to be touched by the poignancy of long lines at soup kitchens and food pantries it is quite another to witness throngs in the darkness bearing credit cards, 美容 waiting to stampede through stores in desperate and hungry-eyed pursuit of flat-screen TVs and Blu-Ray players.

At least earnest groups of neighborhood vocalists are not — yet — going door-to-door singing Black Friday carols.

But just give them time.

The Hsu VTF-1 MK2 subwoofer

It was designed by Poh Hsu and I have fond memories of the first time I met him, at a Consumer Electronics Show in the late 1990s. He had a room filled with subs and a single pair of tiny speakers hooked up to an inexpensive receiver. He played a short series of music pieces with thundering bass drums, mighty organs, and hard-hitting rock bands, and those baby speakers sounded like heavyweight towers. It was a great 2-minute demo, and when it was over I could barely catch my breath, but the first thing I said as I pointed to the wall of subs sitting behind the speakers was, Thats amazing, which subs were playing? Hsu just smiled and said, None of them, and glanced over to the sub that was right next to me. I hadnt even noticed it.

Thats one of the things you should expect from any great sub you should never be aware that its making bass, the sound should appear to come from the speakers. Thats easier to do with bigger speakers, because the sub is only contributing the deepest bass notes, but with really small speakers the sub also supplies higher frequencies that we localize with our ears. You start to hear the sub as a separate sound source, which is why its sometimes best to keep the sub within a few feet of the front speakers in a home theater. Or use the Hsu method, and sit as close as possible to the sub.

The Hsu Research VTF-1 MK2 ($449) is one of Hsus least expensive models in the 10-subwoofer line — prices range from $299 to $2,外汇 299. The VTF-1 MK2 has a 10-inch woofer on its bottom panel and a built-in 200-watt amp. The sub is sold directly from Hsu Research with a 30-day money-back policy and a seven-year warranty. Its not small or demure, no the satin-black-finished sub at 18×14x17 inches was bigger than any other sub I had on hand in the CNET listening room, but it sounded more powerful, made much deeper and more precisely delineated bass than the others. No little sub can match what a well-designed larger sub can do. With subs, size definitely matters.

The rear panel hosts a set of sound-tailoring features rarely equaled on subs that sell for two or three times the VTF-1 MK2s price. Some folks want fat bass, some want tightly defined bass, some buyers want to feel the room shake, other want to only be aware of the subwoofer when the movie or music has deep bass passages.

The VTF-1 MK2 can be fine-tuned to deliver the type of bass you want. It has two large bass ports on its rear panel, which when you unbox the sub are sealed tight with large rubber plugs. You can change the VTF-1 MK2s sound by taking one or two plugs out, or leaving both in, and by adjusting the EQ and Q controls on the rear panel. You can have rich, very full bass or lean, highly defined bass, or anything in between. I prefer cleanly defined bass, as with music I want to hear the pitch of the bass note rather than just a bloated bass sound.

I listened to the VTF-1 MK2 with Hsu HB-1 satellite and HC-1 center speakers and aDenon AVR 1912receiver (Ill cover the complete, 美容 six-piece $1,159Hsu speaker/subwoofer systemsoon on this blog), and also in a 2.1-channel system with a pair ofPioneer SP-FS52tower speakers ($260 a pair). In both cases it was easy to achieve seamless integration between the sub and speakers. The VTF-1 MK2 reproduces the deepest, lowest-frequency sounds with more authority than theAperion Bravus 8Dsub I usually run in the CNET room, and that sub has one 8-inch active woofer and two passive 8-inch woofers versus the VTF-1 MK2s single 10-inch driver.

The Hsu VTF-1&39s rear panel hosts more fine-tuning controls than most subs.

The VTF-1 MK2 added a more visceral kick to movies and music, and it wasnt just that the bass went deeper, the speakers soft-to-loud dynamics were more lifelike. I heard subtleties in the bass, textures, and details in the extreme lows that go unnoticed with other subs. In other words, the system sounded like a much more expensive and larger system. That was especially true when I paired the sub with the Pioneer towers. They sound fine on their own without a sub, but adding the VTF-1 MK2 dramatically opened up the sound. The Pioneers sounded better than many $1,200 speakers. The VTF-1 MK2s low-end prowess plus the speakers highly transparent sound was a winning combination.

I dont wish to lifecast aspersions, but Sarah is not a very good actress. At all points, it looks like she is about to burst out laughing.

Youd think all these wonderfully beautiful, tortured people would need a break. So they have a pool party,美容 where they talk about, oh, the drama between Sarah and Hermione.

This is Jay on Bravo TV&39s site. Isn&39t he gorgeous?

Ben has hooked up with Sarah. Sarah and Hermione fell out. Ben is Hermiones brother. I hope none of them is armed.

Ben and Hermione were brought up separately. He, by his dad, Hermione, by her mom. Does someone ask whether they ever had the hots for each other? Oh, but of course. Thats what you talk about at a pool party.

Then they jump in the pool. Does Facebook have a pool? I forget.

Kim explains the next day that the great thing about start-ups is how nimble they are. This she says as we see her ambling about her office, looking as if she cant decide whether to have tofu or seagrass for lunch.

Kim is struggling with the cameras presence too. Theres an embarrassed grin thats pushing against her lips with every close-up.

One of her bosses wonders whether she has strategic skills. Kim gets upset. She fears that her bosses want to get a gray-haired bullcrapper in to deal with the big clients. Kim may cry.

Happy hour

What should she do? Why, enjoy happy hour with her co-worker friend Lauren. Lauren says shed miss her if she leaves. It seems a good chance that she will, given that this show is called Start-Ups: Silicon Valley.

Sarah brings her dog to a poolside meeting. This is a big meeting. Its the meeting where she may make up with Hermione. Hermione brings a peace offering. Its a sparkly black tiara.

I am not making any of this up. Please believe me. They had fallen out at SXSW over, um, egos or something.

But Sarah is still hurt. She is scared to treat Hermione as a friend. Hermione thinks Sarah has a warped idea of the truth. Will Sarah ever even wear the tiara?

Sarah believes that Hermione is jealous because she kissed Ben and Hermione didnt. Reminder: Hermione is Bens sister.

Wait, will David decide he finds Jay rather attractive? Will he try to seduce him with his healthy app? Jay is a nerd-model, you see.

Meanwhile, Ben and Hermione, leaving aside the incesty undercurrent, have another pitch. Last week, VC Dave McClure dismissed them with a Caesarian wave.

This time, Jeff Clavier of SoftTech is their mark. He is French, although Jeff doesnt feel like a very French name.

The pitch

Ben and Hermione are trying to launch Ignite, 外汇 an app that allows you to monitor your life-expectancy in real time. Yes, the one thing that their generation is most concerned about. Themselves.

They have a piece of hardware to go with their app. Its called the Ignite Pad. My ears may have frayed by this stage, but I could have sworn that they called it theiPad. Creativity rules in the Valley.

Talking of creativity, you might recognize this Ignite Pad. Its really a bathroom scale.

Clavier seems interested. But he needs to see the product.

(Dramatic pause.)

He turns them down.

Hermione understands that if they keep receiving rejections, word will get around. The Valley is just one big pool party, you see.

A model date

Now for the important stuff. David needs to know whether Jay fancies Sarah. He needs to know whether Jays ever enjoyed, you know, male conjoinment. Or even a man with a vagina. Because they exist, he informs.

Well, Jay is a model.

We end with the big pitch. Sarah and Jay go on a date. Where will he take her? Sadly, Jay — who is a model — hasnt organized anything. He leers at her a little. He hasnt dressed up at all.

So she tweets a picture of his dishevelment to her Twitter followers. Wouldnt you? Sarah explains how much she has mani-pedied and spray-tanned in preparation.

Jay takes her to see the fireworks. Thank goodness he has a beanie. Its cold.

Jays so hot, I forgave him right on the spot, says Sarah.

Indeed, she goes into the bathroom and lifecasts her progress. Jay, who is a model, suddenly receives notifications that this date is already on the Internet.

Sarah feels chemistry. She might start a family with him, she believes.

I believe Jay may not be thinking the same way.
