CHAMPAIGN For the new Illinois basketball staff, the decision to pursue Rayvonte Rice was a simple one, really.

John Groce & Co. was familiar with Rice after recruiting him and offering him a scholarship when Rice was a star at Centennial.

I think the biggest thing is the comfort level I had with him dating back to our time at Ohio, Groce said.

Tuesday was the first time the UI staff could publicly talk about Rices decision to transfer from Drake to Illinois. The 2010 News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year officially became an Illini after signing a tender of financial aid. He will be eligible for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons after sitting out next season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound guard also fits the staffs profile of a hard-edged, go-get-it type of player. And after getting their first look at the current Illini during spring workouts, it became clear Rices big bodySenior Dating and scoring punch could be a valuable addition.

Hes watched the Fighting Illini from a very close proximity in terms of being a hometown kid, Groce said. It means something to him, it does. I like coaching guys where it means something to them. … I think hes going to appreciate it even more.

Groce said he likes that Rice has been wired to score throughout his career both at Centennial, where he holds the career scoring record, and at Drake, where he led the Bulldogs in scoring in each of his two seasons.

But the coach would like to see Rice improve his three-point shooting percentage of 24 percent as a sophomore.

I think hes a better shooter than that, Groce said.

Rice was an All-Missouri Valley Conference second-team selection last season as a sophomore. He previously was named to the MVCs All-Freshman and All-Newcomer teams. Coaches also appreciate that Rice is an excellent rebounder as a guard (5.8 per game).

I think hes got a body thats Big Ten-ready, Groce said. Its going to help his ability to score the ball. Thats always going to translate.

Groce said the staff still is pursuing players who would be eligible to play next season. There are precious few graduating high school seniors who are still available and could help the Illini.
